Fifteen authors offer this "Conservative Statement of Principles on Immigration":

In his farewell address to the nation, President Reagan said: "I've spoken of the Shining City all my political life . . . [I]n my mind it was . . . teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace, a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity. And if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and heart to get here."

America is a nation of immigrants. Except for Native American Indians, everyone in this country came to America or is here due to the good fortune that a parent, grandparent, or other relation came before them. Keeping a door open to those with the "will and heart to get here" is vital to our economy, our culture, our role in the world, and our historic tradition as a land of freedom and opportunity.

Conservatives believe in legal immigration. We believe that America grows stronger by welcoming those who seek to better their families, work in our industries, and find liberty and refuge from oppression.

Conservatives oppose illegal immigration. We believe there is a right way and a wrong way to immigrate to the U.S. However, as conservatives we believe that our laws must reflect reality and common sense, be fiscally responsible, and avoid the loss of innocent life. Our current immigration laws do not pass this test.

Between 1990 and 2000, the U.S. increased the number of Border Patrol Agents from 3,600 to 10,000. During that same period illegal immigration rose by 5.5. million. Moreover, over the past eight years, more than 2,000 men, women, and children have died attempting to cross into America and seek the opportunity to work and achieve a better life. The status quo is unacceptable and clinging to the status quo -- or tougher versions of it -- is neither conservative nor principled. It has become clear that the only viable approach to reform is combining enforcement with additional legal avenues for those who wish to work in our economy, while also addressing the situation of those already here in the U.S.

President Bush has proposed a new legal path to work in the U.S. through a temporary worker program that will match willing workers with willing employers. We applaud the president and believe his approach holds great promise to reduce illegal immigration and establish a humane, orderly, and economically sensible approach to migration that will aid homeland security and free up border-security assets to focus on genuine threats. The president has shown courage by calling on Congress to place reality over rhetoric and recognize that those already working here outside the law are unlikely to leave. Congress can fulfill its role by establishing sufficient increases in legal immigration and paths to permanent residence to enable more workers to stay, assimilate, and become part of America.

We believe strongly in assimilation and oppose efforts to weaken the historical process that has led to e pluribus unum. While immigrants by and large reject entreaties by those who favor multiculturalism, the best defense is a good offense: making the teaching of English and civics a priority in our schools, community colleges, and adult education programs.

Immigrants are crucial to our competitiveness and future labor and economic growth, as well as our military strength. Our country's welcoming attitude to immigrants will permit the U.S. to grow and prosper, as the populations of many other nations stagnate and decline. Each generation of Americans must connect our nation's past to its future and in so doing keep President Reagan's vision of the "Shining City" alive.

Newt is for amnesty. In CNN June debate he , not unlike Perry, used the word heartless against those that would like to deport illegal aliens as REQUIRED BY LAW! Either change the
law, or enforce it...at least pick a candidate who might do one or the other!

Gingrich Backs Obamacare’s Individual Mandate Requiring Health Insurance

Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Gingrich told host David Gregory that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman, which requires every uninsured citizen to purchase or acquire health insurance.
Meet the Press in October 1993: “I am for people, individuals -- exactly like automobile insurance -- individuals having health insurance and being required to have health insurance. And I am prepared to vote for a voucher system which will give individuals, on a sliding scale, a government subsidy so we insure that everyone as individuals have health insurance.”

Gregory asked Gingrich if he would criticize GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney, whose "Romneycare" health program enacted during his time as Governor in Massachusetts mandated that all uninsured purchase health insurance.

Gingrich replied he would not make it an issue in the campaign and said he agreed with key aspects of Romneycare.

"I agree that all of us have a responsibility to pay--help pay for health care," Gingrich said, adding, "I've said consistently we ought to have some requirement that you either have health insurance or you post a bond ..."

Washington (CNN) - Two-thirds of Americans don't want to make it easier for illegal immigrants to become citizens....
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Sunday indicates that 66 percent of Americans say the U.S. should not make it easier for illegal immigrants to become citizens, with 33 percent disagreeing.

Forty-two percent of Democrats questioned say the path to citizenship for illegal immigrants should be made easier. That number drops to 33 percent for independents and 16 percent for Republican respondents.

"Virtually all major subgroups oppose making it easier for illegal immigrants to become citizens, at least in the abstract ... Specific legislation that puts limits on the ability to gain citizenship has sometimes met with favor in the past if it restricts the number who can apply and penalizes them for staying in the country illegally. But the overall principle remains unpopular."

According to the poll, 52 percent are sympathetic to illegal immigrants and their families, down five points from 2006, with 47 percent unsympathetic, up eight points from four years ago.
The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted March 19-21, with 1,030 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

Mexico extradites flight attendant who set fire on U.S. flight

Mexico City –Aug 5, 2011

The Mexican Attorney General's Office said Thursday it extradited a former flight attendant who had fled the United States after his arrest for setting fire to a plane's bathroom.

Eder H. Rojas, a Mexican national, was wanted for extradition by a federal court in North Dakota for setting the fire 35 minutes after the Compass Airlines flight carrying 76 people took off in 2008 from Minneapolis bound for Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Rojas, then 19, another flight attendant and a passenger extinguished the blaze after the fire alarm sounded, but the plane still was forced make an emergency landing in the North Dakota city of Fargo.

After being questioned by FBI agents, Rojas confessed that he was upset with the airline for making him work the Minneapolis-Regina route and that was why he used a lighter to set fire to a packet of toilet paper in the plane's bathroom.[snip]

Top Mexico trafficker claims he was DEA informant

A top Mexican drug trafficker awaiting trial in Chicago is claiming that he has immunity from prosecution as he was working all along as a confidential informant for U.S. agents -- allegations the U.S. government denies.

Jesus Vicente Zambada-Niebla is the son of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, the right-hand man of Mexico's most wanted criminal, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman who leads the powerful Sinaloa cartel.

The younger Zambada, who is charged with cocaine and heroin trafficking, is claiming he was an informant for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and was given immunity from prosecution at the top level of government.

One of a slick new generation of Mexican traffickers, dubbed "narco juniors" south of the border, Zambada's extradition was hailed by the Justice Department as one of the most significant in years.

But court documents filed by his lawyers in late July argue that a deal was struck between the DEA and Sinaloa cartel attorney Humberto Loya in 1998, granting Loya and top cartel chiefs immunity for providing information about their rivals.

Zambada claims the agreement was "known and approved" by the Justice Department and cartel leaders and is seeking to have all charges tossed arguing he took over from Loya the role of "primary liaison on behalf of the Sinaloa Cartel with the United States government" in 2008.

A snappy dresser far from the brash Mexican cowboy style of his father, Zambada claims to have met with regional directors of the DEA for Latin America and Mexico at a hotel in downtown Mexico City shortly before his arrest where he received guarantees of his immunity from prosecution.

He said they beat his father and another man, and told them to plug their ears and not watch. Hours later, the children were taken in a series of vehicles and dropped in a shopping mall in Apodaca, where a group of soldiers took them to the Municipal Police. (It is unusual that they let the children live and released them.) The report states the photo of the children is being released in hopes of locating some family. There has been no sign of the parents or other family taken.

We are not surprised that Obama came to the defense of this monster, he needs all the imported 3rd world votes he can get, and this perp would have been eligible for the 'Dream Act' Amnesy, but it is disappointing that Bush chose him over US children and international/Mexican law over our own.

In 2005, President George W. Bush agreed with an International Court of Justice ruling that Leal and 50 other Mexican-born inmates nationwide should be entitled to new hearings in U.S. courts to determine if their consular rights were violated. The Supreme Court later overruled Bush.

My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner, DEA is adding 16 new positions on the border, as well as mobile enforcement teams, and the FBI is creating a new intelligence group focusing on kidnapping and extortion. DHS is making similar commitments, as Secretary Napolitano will detail."

Operation Gunrunner was funded by the 2009 Stimulus Package

I remember seeing Project Gunrunner in a bill that was discussed
here. The original thread about it was a rumor thread that HR45 had
been rolled into the stimulus package.

In that thread I scanned the text of H.R.1 American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009 for gun, firearm, etc and came up with a hit.

I posted in the thread: "Only time “gun” or “firearm” appears is in
the part that give $10,000,000 to the ATF for Project Gunrunner. That
was H.R. 495, asking for 15,000,000 for Gunrunner".

H.R. 495 that I mentioned never made it out of committee, but it looks
as it was to specifically fund Gunrunner.

Instead portions of it were rolled into the stimulus package a month
later. That text found in H.R.1 is:

For an additional amount for ‘State and Local Law Enforcement
Assistance’, $40,000,000, for competitive grants to provide assistance
and equipment to local law enforcement along the Southern border and
in High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas to combat criminal narcotics
activity stemming from the Southern border, of which $10,000,000 shall
be transferred to ‘Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives, Salaries and Expenses’ for the ATF Project Gunrunner.

Notice that's $40,000,000 for Southern border enforcement, $10,000,000
of which specifically for Project Gunrunner. What does $10 million pay
for here? It didn't hire any new agents that I am aware of.

If you ever watch video or look at pictures of Mexican drug wars, you
see some pretty heavy weapons. It is a war being waged with rockets
and plastic explosives, not pea shooters and Saturday Night Specials.

Consider these incidents:- A M26A2 fragmentation grenade used against
a U.S. Consulate in Mexico in 2008 - Explosive projectiles and 21
grenades found during a raid in Guadalupe - An unexploded grenade and
pull ring used to attack a TV station in Monterrey - Automatic
weapons, including U.S.-made M16s, found at a cartel crime scene in
May 2009- U.S. military-issued ammunition found in a cartel raid in
Reynosa in November 2008. You can't buy this stuff at a U.S. gun
store. So where do the cartels get it?

According to leaked diplomatic cables, there are three sources.

1. US Defense Department shipments to Latin America, known and tracked
by the US State Department as "foreign military sales."

2. Weapons ordered by the Mexican government, tracked by the State
Department as "direct commercial sales."

3. Aging, but plentiful arsenals of military weapon stores in
Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

Even though these facts were well-known by the Obama administration,
including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Attorney General Eric
Holder, it blamed much of the violence in Mexico on US gun shops.
"More than 90% of the guns recovered in Mexico come from the United
States, many from gun shops that line our border," President Obama
said in February 2009.

Local TV in Arizona has reported that on Thursday, July 7, 2011, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, with Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Alan Bersin and Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske, will be announcing the 2011 Southwest Border Counternarcotics Strategy in Nogales, Ariz.

I wonder to the extent Secretary Napolitano will acknowledge Operation Fast and Furious as one of many failed – in fact neglectful – programs from last year. Yet, Attorney General Holder, who has current oversight over Operation Fast and Furious, will not be joining Secretary Napolitano to add to the transparency of the discussion regarding this horrid operation, let alone fill out the details on the rest of the counternarcotics strategy, which typically includes a large cache of work for federal prosecutors dealing with the cartel's criminal, immigration and smuggling activities, alongside the FBI and DEA's activities. How convenient. The secretary can buck the questions regarding the ATF, FBI, DEA, and all other highly pertinent counternarcotics strategy questions because it is not within her jurisdiction.

Maybe I'll be wrong. Yet unless the Attorney General is a surprise guest, I doubt this press conference will be more than the rhetoric the secretary herself complains about incessantly. Nor will we learn how the ugly operations of cartels are being stemmed in any real way.

Mexico vs. USA...Hypocrisy in Action

This happens every year.....and every year it shocks the senses. Or it should. But by next week, most of us will forget about it, pretend Mexico is not our enemy, like we do every year. As the Obama administration ushers in an unconstitutional AMNESTY, and illegal alien invaders burn us out one state at a time , we will sit by allowing DHS to incrementally ignore one immigration law after another, being more concerned about some politicians kid, American Idol or the gossip de' jour than the incremental loss of our sovereignty.

Victor Davis Hanson says it best today in his article "Mexifornia, quite Literally!"

"When a foreign nation is treated as the home team, and when the home team is booed in the Rose Bowl, I think we can see why the entire open-borders, non-enforcement, ‘La Raza’ paradigm of tribal chauvinism based on ethnic solidarity has been proven an abject failure — summed up by one word, “hypocrisy.” Of course, if America asks nothing of the would-be immigrant — no legality upon entrance, no knowledge of the English language or American customs, no proof of autonomy and independence from government entitlement — then tens of thousands of American residents booing the very mention of America is logical and would, of course, continue until and unless fundamental ideas about illegal immigration, assimilation, and national identity change.

Has anyone seen ANY of our fine republican presidential candidates address any of these border and immigration problems???????

The 5-3 decision gives states more authority to act against illegal immigrants. Justices rule that states can take away the business licenses of companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

[Justice] Roberts noted that eight other states had passed similar laws. They are Colorado, Mississippi, Missouri, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

The other Arizona law involving police enforcement has been challenged — successfully, so far — by the Obama administration and civil-rights groups. They say enforcement of laws against illegal immigration is exclusively in the hands of federal authorities. [snips]

Let's compare two countries side by side. Country A has a sizable middle class and economy, social welfare benefits and a low birth rate. Country B is a failed state where thugs run amok in the street, a few families control the economy and the birth rate is off the charts.

Country A's citizens are taught that nationalism is evil and that everyone should get along. Country B's citizens are taught that they are the greatest people that ever lived and would be running the world if not for Country A. But despite all this, Country B's citizens all want to move to Country A. And Country A wants to let them. Because Country A needs new workers to subsidize its welfare state and voters who will vote for pro-social welfare parties.

Since Country B's workers want the social welfare benefits, they move to Country A. Country A ends up with a huge failed state population and dramatically increases its social welfare spending for them. Bankruptcy threatens, but change is almost impossible because the pro-social welfare benefits party has become very hard to beat. The pro-reform parties no longer tackle immigration, but try to get the immigrant vote. Their reforms turn into band aids. Country A slides toward the abyss. Country B continues shipping more immigrants every year who remain loyal to its culture and religion.

Law enforcement intelligence has linked over 150 drug seizures since May 2008 totaling approximately 28,000 pounds of marijuana to the Valencia-Rodriguez DTO. In February, 2010, law enforcement officials also seized 41 assault weapons in the San Miguel vicinity which were en-route from Phoenix, Arizona to Valencia-Rodriguez in Mexico. The Valencia-Rodriguez organization uses compartments in vehicles, ramped vehicle loads, concealed tire loads, and backpackers to facilitate drug transportation operations in the remote desert area.

TUCSON — Nogales station Border Patrol agents prevented nearly 5,000 rounds of ammunition from being smuggled out of the United States and into the hands of transnational criminal organizations in Mexico on Sunday.

Agents from the Nogales Border Patrol station responded to reports of three suspicious individuals dressed in black carrying backpacks just north of the International Boundary Fence (IBF). Upon arrival, agents observed one subject fitting the description running south, leaving behind three backpacks. At the same time, operators using a Remote Video Surveillance System (RVSS) observed two other subjects absconding into Mexico over the IBF.

During an inspection of the three backpacks, agents discovered 4,951 rounds of 9 mm and 500 rounds of .40-caliber pistol ammunition. The ammunition was seized and transported to the Nogales Border Patrol station.
