UCI student’s epic response to his school’s ‘flag ban’ exposes truth behind decision

EDITOR’S NOTE: Nick Gallo is a 2nd-year PhD student in the department of computer science at UC Irvine, where an undergraduate student government subcommittee recently voted to ban displaying the American flag on some parts of campus.
Gallo’s epic response to that resolution, a detailed insider’s explanation, absolutely nails how and why a decision like this could take place.
Last Thursday the ASUCI Legislative Council voted 6-4-2 to ban the display of the American flag in the ASUCI lobby. This triggered a huge backlash among students opposed to the measure and received national media attention. UCI administration immediately went into damage control mode, releasing a statement that these students were “misguided” and that this decision was in no way supported by campus leadership. Chancellor Gillman promptly followed up, lamenting how it is “inevitable” when you get a bunch of “young people” together that some of them will occasionally express views that are “unconventional and even outrageous.” “It was outrageous and indefensible,” he exclaimed “that they would question the appropriateness of displaying the American flag on this great campus.”
Where on earth could these “misguided” students have gotten such an “outrageous” idea? Where are they getting their guidance from? Could it be from the administration constantly suffocating the student body with statements about how we need to enhance our “diversity” and “inclusivity?” Could it be their complete failure to identify and champion American values in any meaningful way? Let’s take a closer look.
When I applied to the UC Irvine PhD program, I was required to submit a statement about how I would enhance the “diversity” of the university. Why was I not required to submit a similar statement about what I love about America, how I will uphold American values and further the cause of this great nation? Why aren’t international students required to answer these questions and write a statement about which American values they find so appealing and why they are excited to be a part of American culture?
Rather than addressing this apparent disparity, on Jan. 30 of this year Chancellor Gillman doubled down, asserting via campus-wide e-mail that “in the area of faculty recruitment, we instituted a requirement that all applicants submit with their application materials a statement indicating their past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion.” In the same e-mail, he emphasized UCI’s commitment to “inclusive excellence,” lauded UCI’s workshop on “Identifying Micro-aggressions,” stated that he was forming a special Task Force to make African American students feel more welcome and engaged in campus life and stated the administration’s intention to alter the racial makeup of the student body in order to qualify for a Hispanic Serving Institution designation by the federal government.
Similarly, on Feb. 13, Vice Chancellor Parham issued an unusual e-mail condemning “instances of cultural insensitivity” stating that the administration joins with “our Muslim brothers and sisters” in the aftermath of the senseless UNC Chapel Hill murders of three Muslims and encouraged affected students to utilize the UCI Counseling Center. However, on Jan. 7, when twelve cartoonists in Paris were publicly executed by ruthless Jihadists (and no, despite this juxtaposition, I am not conflating “Muslims” with “Jihadists”) for drawing a caricature of Mohammed, the administration was silent. Despite the international media attention, the administration offered no special counseling sessions or condolences to French students, no statements about “cultural insensitivity,” and didn’t take the opportunity to champion cherished American values of Freedom of Expression and Religion or state our nation’s commitment to securing these freedoms throughout the world.
The message from the administration to the student body is clear: we need to be more tolerant and more inclusive. Minority students feel constantly unwelcome and we need to do something about it.
Six students dutifully applied this logic toward international students in the ASUCI lobby, there was a huge backlash and they were promptly thrown under the bus.
I agree with Mr. Gillman’s retroactive assessment that this resolution was “outrageous.” I disagree with the destructive, hypercritical narrative of America presented in this resolution that is popular among some students and professors at U.S. universities. I believe the flag is an uncompromising tribute to our honored veterans and our fallen soldiers who sacrificed so much to secure the fragile liberty which we have been so fortunate to inherit.
However, I think the administration owes these six students (and the public) an explanation as to why their attempt at “inclusivity” was so “misguided.” Are UCI’s internal policies and statements on “inclusivity” themselves contradictory and misguided? Should UCI offer educational programs arguing against the view of America spelled out in this resolution? We have entire offices dedicated to “diversity,” why not one to promote American values and a healthy understanding of our culture, especially among international students?
What should we tell international students coming to UCI? The voice of the student body is clear: we are a tolerant, vibrant community, we invite you here and we welcome you here. We give you great freedom to express many aspects of your culture within our borders, but there are certain things about our culture, like the display of our flag, that we simply refuse to compromise, no matter how offensive you may find it. The position of the administration is surprisingly contradictory and unclear. Perhaps it is time we hold them accountable.

 Yeah, Mark Zuckerburg is an open border seditious little elitist, but it's my 'friends' I can no longer abide.  You know who you are.
Now, I have two kinds of friends….the kind who give a rip about their country and their fellow Americans, who come here daily to TRY to educate you and plead for help before this country is totally lost and then there are those who care more about American Idol and offer up their daily prayer to ease their conscience  for doing NOTHING!   

Well, you 'good' Christians ought to take this advice…the Lord helps those who help themselves, and instead of sitting on your ignorant asses waiting for those, like me, to stand up and defend you when they come after you, WAKE UP.  I don't claim to be a good church goer, and the biggest difference between me and MOST of you is that when the crap hits the fan, I will be there beside you defending your right to practice the religion you choose.  And you?  You will be hiding in your sanctuary when they come after me, insulting me like you often do because YOU are too chicken shit to open your mouth to save the nation who bestowed its treasures on you.  There are two kinds of people in churches…saints and sinners and I know which one I am..but most of you do not.   My family has been here since the 1600's…others of my family even met them on the shore.   Dozens of them  fought and died to build this nation from the Revolution to Viet Nam…to give YOU freedom. 

I watch and wait every day for those of you in my age group to DO SOMETHING besides practice pop culture while singing, 'we are the world' and pretend all is going to be fine with you sitting there like an ignorant putz criticizing those of us trying to salvage what is left!  Oh, yeah, you vote…SADLY, because 90% of you never bother to explore who or why you are voting for,  YOU are what is wrong with this nation…not the Muslims, not the illegal aliens, not even the politicians that you re elect cycle after cycle in your blindness.  YOU are the reason this nation is in decline because you abdicate knowledge and common sense for emotion.  If not for your country, one would think you'd stand up and fight for your children, but then many of you didn't even try to protect them either, you were too busy trying to be popular! Well, guess what…this AIN'T a popularity contest and I don't care if you like me.  I won't play your pathetic little games. GROW  up, people, this isn't high school!  You are short on this earth, do something besides waste resources and piss and moan about those of us who don't meet your politically correct/sold  out utopia.

This morning was a story about the corrupt Clintons and a 'friend' asked me,  "Where are our safe guards for this type of baloney? Who is watching out for us?!"
WE are the safeguards and NO ONE is watching out for us….WE THE PEOPLE, this is our fault and our responsibility.  We allowed our society to be so ignorant that they keep voting in the likes of the Clintons and Bush's.   WE elect these subversives because WE don't want to make waves or take the time to actually understand who and why we elect our leaders.
So, I'm gone, don't know if I'll be back.   I will spend my time only on people who want to learn, who have some patriotism left, who can spend their time sharing information rather than insults and misinformation.   We are out of time.

 Finally, Levin gets around to Grover Norquist.   Levin,  on his radio show as I type, is asking Who is Grover Norquist?  Norquist went after Levin and his fellow radio talk show hosts in a recent interview. It has Mr. Levin perplexed.

It shouldn't!  IF Levin had been paying attention, IF he had not refused to read the truth of the charlatan named Grover ALL these years that has been given to him, he'd know who the hell this traitor is!  AND yes, to answer your question, he most certainly is a friend of Karl Rove!  And when did he become a 'leader'...when YOU weren't looking, Mark!

A few days ago, I wrote:  Mark Levin, who I admired for 12 years until he endorsed Liz Cheney and excuses Rubio for everything, is all over gop media pushing his new book and 'theory' to 'save the country'.  Here's the part Levin doesn't get with his ' take it to the states/amendment plan'.

 Karl Rove, usually by way of Grover Norquist,  runs GOP DC.      Norquist also  has a "I'll throw you out like Enzi if you don't tow my line" situation with most state legislators.  This is exactly what is happening in Wyoming by running Liz against ANTI AMNESTY Enzi!   This generally means getting no gop support in the next election or even supporting another GOP candidate to run against you if you don't pull Grover's stinky amnesty finger!

 This stench just isn't in DC, the dark side of the GOP owns state legislators as well.  THAT is how they got RUBIO*!   And they hijacked and claimed ownership of the tea party to do it!

I can't tell you how many times in the last month good republicans have gone after me because I dared to disclose the truth about the KOCH Bros. Misguided conservatives are all taken in at the idea the Kochs might buy some big newspapers and they're singing the praises of their rich 'saviors'...they simply won't hear that the Kochs have ALWAYS been pro amnesty....contributed hugely to Marco Rubio and hire GRover Norquist to do their bidding. 

The Norquist fraud group ATR got millions from the Kochs last year & millions from Karl Roves' pac who gets money from the KOCHS. They're for every 'free trade' , cheap labor agreement and same sex marriage.
What is it going to take to get the conservative base to look at FACTS!??

Koch Sponsors Pro-Amnesty BuzzFeed Event

An event touting itself as an evening of immigration reform discussion with a "diversity of opinion" turns out to be slanted heavily towards "comprehensive immigration reform." The BuzzFeed Brews Special Edition: Immigration Summit, sponsored by the Charles Koch Institute, will take place Tuesday, May 14th from 6 PM - 8 PM Eastern Time. The Charles Koch Institute is an educational offshoot of the Charles Koch Foundation. 

It's an unusual pairing: BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith has a reputation for liberal bias (he recently blamed "the right" for conditions of Kermit Gosnell's abortion clinic) will be the moderator; Charles Koch, founder of the libertarian CATO Institute, is one of the people most reviled by the left.
The goal of the event is described as follows:

[W]e believe one of the best ways to turn conversations into solutions is through the challenge of assumptions and exchange of ideas. Our event on immigration aims to do just that by bringing together a diversity of opinions for a thoughtful dialogue.

At first glance, the panel appears diverse: the six invitees include a Democrat politician, a Republican politician, two members of conservative organizations, one from a liberal Hispanic/Latino organization, and one from a libertarian think tank.
Looking closer, however, five of the invitees are strongly in favor of the comprehensive immigration reform/amnesty package being put forward by the "Gang of Eight" in Congress. Only one guest--from The Heritage Foundation--has been critical of the proposed immigration reform package. Additionally, an illegal immigrant who is an award-winning journalist will be assisting in broadcasting the event.
Here's the lineup:
Clarissa Martinez, Director of Immigration & National Campaigns at National Council of La Raza: NCLR has been funded by George Soros's Open Society Foundation, describes itself as "the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States," and has been a major supporter of the current immigration reform bill. La Raza and Ms. Martinez were directly involved in a controversial memo that granted de facto amnesty by changing ICE policy in 2012. Ironically, La Raza joined with the NAACP and other institutional left to protest in front of the Koch Industries offices months ago, accusing the Kochs of savaging democracy.
Mario Lopez, President at Hispanic Leadership Fund: The group describes itself as center-right and says its mission is "strengthening working families by promoting common-sense public policy solutions rooted in free enterprise, limited government, and individual freedom." The group is strongly supportive of "comprehensive immigration reform."
The advisory board of the Hispanic Leadership Fund includes Grover Norquist, who has been strongly critical of the recent Heritage Foundation report that claims that the proposed 800+ page immigration reform bill will have a long-term cost of over $6 trillion. Lopez was involved in what some are calling a "smear of immigration hawks" when he launched a guilt-by-association attack on Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies for supposedly not sharing conservative policy goals.
Joaquin Castro: A freshman Democrat congressman from Texas and the twin brother of San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, the keynote speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Their mother, Maria "Rosie" Castro, was a community organizer and helped found the socialist, anti-Anglo political group La Raza Unidas (The Race United), whose goal is the "the Liberation of Aztlan, and that Aztlan is composed of five southwestern states; California, Arizona, Nuevo Mexico, Tejas and Colorado." Joaquin has done a number of talk show appearances and has been described as "the unofficial ambassador on immigration for the Obama Administration."
Luis G. Fortuño, former Governor of Puerto Rico: A Republican, he is on the Advisory Board of the Hispanic Leadership Fund. In 2007, he supported Gang of Eight member Jeff Flake's STRIVE act (co-sponsored with Democrat Luis Gutierrez) that included amnesty, saying, "Only a comprehensive immigration reform plan like the STRIVE Act will help us achieve an effective, lasting, and viable solution to the immigration issues facing our nation."
Jose Antonio Vargas will be live-tweeting the event. Although he's not a panelist, Mr. Vargas is a participant and is mentioned promimently on the website advertising the event. He's a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, as well as an undocumented alien who revealed his illegal status over a year ago. He discusses his status as an unrepentant illegal alien in an essay on his blog entitled Not Legal, Not Leaving.
Alex Nowrasteh, Immigration Policy Analyst at The Cato Institute: CATO has been helping to push the immigration reform bill and has been a harsh critic of The Heritage Foundation's report. CATO touts the fact that Nowrasteh's criticism of the Heritage report was cited on MSNBC. Nowrasteh was also cited by Jennifer Rubin's roundup of Heritage critiques: "[He] accused Heritage of not following years of their own work, which has striven to look at the impact on behavior of changes resulting from reforming the tax code and other innovations." Breitbart News revealed Nowrasteh's involvement in coordinated emails with Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform attacking the Heritage report.

The mix of Buzzfeed and Charles Koch would be unusual on almost any other issue but the not-so-subtle goal of the event as demonstrated by its lineup has not gone unnoticed even beyond conservative circles.  Dave Weigel notes in Slate:

[A]s a veteran of the Koch-funded Reason magazine, I can report that the libertarian brothers have always put their money behind immigration reform. Maybe that complicates their newfound (well, 3-year-old) role as all-purpose rich guy demons; they're sponsoring a night of debates intended to nudge along immigration reform.

Expect plenty of nudging at the Koch-sponsored BuzzFeed Brews event; a night of exhibition insider baseball where BuzzFeed Ben Smith underhands softballs to his pro-immigration reform panelists, who will do their best to drill them right at The Heritage Foundation.
