Why we are a Republic, NOT a Democracy! BE CAREFUL what you wish for!
"No amendment is absolute,"
One way to create a stir with the Founding Fathers of the United States, if they were alive today, would be to announce the country they set up is now a democracy.A democracy is defined as:“A system of government by the whole population, or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives” and “the practice or principles of social equality”.The Founding Fathers thought democracy was dangerous.James Madison stated:“Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.” 3The “tyranny of the majority” as voiced by John Adams was another issue.4 What better and easier way to maneuver a populous than through a charismatic leader who, with skilled rhetoric, can get the populous to vote for whatever he wishes? The Founding Fathers preferred to fashion the United States on the Roman model, which eschewed monarchy but allowed for indirect popular influence through elected representatives.
" I wrote then how democracy is literally picking the most popular candidate (at least theoretically, in a perfect, direct democracy).
The thing is, why on earth do we think the most popular candidate would be the best choice?
Let’s face it, the data are not encouraging. As George Carlin said, imagine how stupid the average person is, then realize half of them are even more stupid.
Democracy is not about merit; it’s about popularity
So, let’s see what “popularity” has brought us.
What Plato said about democracy is pretty revealing.
When a democracy which is thirsting for freedom has evil cupbearers presiding over the feast, and has drunk too deeply of the strong wine of freedom, then, unless her rulers are very amenable and give a plentiful draught, she calls them to account and punishes them, and says that they are cursed oligarchs[…] In such a state of society the master fears and flatters his scholars, and the scholars despise their masters and tutors; young and old are all alike; and the young man is on a level with the old, and is ready to compete with him in word or deed; and old men condescend to the young and are full of pleasantry and gaiety; they are loath to be thought morose and authoritative, and therefore they adopt the manners of the young.
Plato’s Republic, Book 8
Plato realized why democracy failed – even in ideal conditions, such as the direct democracy of ancient Athens. Democracy inevitably fails because it is predicated not on merit but on popularity.
We are in a society currently who worships style over substance, or 'popularity' as the above writer noted. Until we elevate substance and leave style to human interest editors, this nation is in TROUBLE.
1. Protect the innocent.
2. Never ask someone to do something that you are not willing to do yourself.
3. Leave it like you found it, or make it better.
4. Keep your promises and pay your bills - on time.
5. SILENCE IS CONSENT.
6. Slavery didn’t happen because people are black or white. Evil isn’t particular about color.
7. Be careful what you wish for.
8. NEVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
9. Greed is more devastating than poverty.
10. Your rights stop where my nose starts.
11. You are only as strong as what you stand next to, that from which you draw your strength.
12. Youth and strength are no match for old age and treachery.
13. Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and annoys the pig!! (this is the one I can't seem to get right! )
