Yes, there is a lot of that going on these days with the down slide in the economy, no surprise.
The way it was done was certainly a shock to their employees.
A letter to the editor from the employees tells the story:

I have a question for you. Have you ever felt like you had a rug pulled out from under your feet? But this is what this family along with close to 20 others are feeling right now.
It all started when Orcal, Inc. (known to everyone in Yreka as Denny’s) came in and closed the place down without any warning at all. The manager running the store did not even know it was coming! They simply came in, stopped all orders, canceled anything coming into the store and kicked everyone out.
It did not matter to these people that they destroyed close to 20 families’ livelihood, or that they dropped them into an area that has around 18 percent unemployment in its county, and that finding another job will be more than hard but will be close to impossible for some. They did not care about that, they were only caring about their bottom line. Some of the employees were lucky to receive the correct amount on their last pay checks. They certainly made sure no one got a penny extra.
They reminded us of bank take-overs who come in and take over everything in the dead of night. But unlike those take-overs that leave a bank open in the morning for its customers and employees, this company did not care what they did to their employees and their families. There is no business open under another name, there are only locked doors and everything that once stood for this business disappearing by the second along with the livelihood for everyone that has stood beside them and worked for them through these rough times.
My husband is just one of these people who gave everything he could for this company. He would drop whatever he was doing whenever he would get a call that they needed help, no matter how many days he had just worked or what time it might be, day or night.
Shame on you Orcal, Inc. (Denny’s)! I hope someday to find some forgiveness for what you have done to all our lives, but at this time it is pretty hard to find any!

WASHINGTON (September 8, 2009) - As President Obama addresses the nation on health care reform, a new analysis by the Center for Immigration Studies estimates that 6.6 million uninsured illegal immigrants could receive benefits under the House health reform bill (H.R. 3200). While the bill states that illegal immigrants are not eligible for the new taxpayer-funded affordability credits, there is nothing in the bill to enforce this provision. Congress defeated efforts to require the use of the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program. More than 70 other programs of this kind use SAVE.
