Immigration Myth of the day Debunked!
Myth: "Latinos are Catholic, they don't have abortions"
RESULTS: In 2000, 21 out of every 1,000 women of reproductive age had an abortion. Women who are aged 18-29, unmarried, black or Hispanic, or economically disadvantaged—including those on Medicaid—have higher abortion rates.

In fact, abortion rates among Latinas are higher than those among non-Latina white women www.alanguttmacher.org/pubs/journals/3703905.html
According to the International Planned Parenthood Federation, an estimated 5,000 women die every year in Latin America as a result of illegal abortions. A further 800,000 are hospitalized due to complications, according to the Alan Guttmacher Institute. In many Latin countries, machismo dictates that a man must have as many children as possible in order to affirm his value and virility, pressuring his wife or girlfriend into having sex without contraception. Ironically, the abortion rate in Latin American nations is often higher than in countries that allow choice. In Chile, where a woman can serve up to five years for having the procedure, almost 5% of women have an induced abortion, while in the U.S. the rate is just 2%. http://www.cuerpomag.com/bodysense.html
OTHER interesting facts:
Only 20% of Latinas in California have employment-based insurance, three
times lower the rate than for Anglo women (60%).
One-third of reported AIDS cases within Latinas have been under the age of 30 at the time of diagnosis. The HIV infec-tion rate is 7 times higher for Latinas than the rate for Anglo women
